Drawing Fundamentals - 10 weeks


This class helps students develop an understanding of the fundamental drawing concepts of construction, proportion, and form. Our focus for Fall 2019 will mainly be on the human body and face.

Through step-by-step demonstrations and then more self-directed exercises using reference models, we’ll study human anatomy and arrive at a better understanding of how to draw human figures in various poses.

The goal of the class isn’t to draw in a realistic style, but to create believable-looking characters that can be adapted to illustration, comics, or animation.

This is a great choice for students who want to strengthen their drawing skills, while still having the freedom to explore their own art styles.


About the instructor: Janice Liu is the artist and co-creator of the children's graphic novel Chicken Soup & Goji Berries 中药鸡汤. Her comic shorts have been published in various teen & literary magazines, and in the comic anthology Wayward Sisters: An Anthology of Monstrous Women. Janice has been teaching art since 2013, and is the owner and teaching artist at Young Artists' Place in Burnaby, where she runs art & comics classes. She is also a creative writing and comics instructor at Place des Arts in Coquitlam.

There is no class on October 12-13 (Thanksgiving long weekend) or November 9-10 (Remembrance Day weekend).
