Learn how to use professional drawing and painting software to create illustrations on the computer from start-to-finish. Whether you're a picture book illustrator, a designer, or you just want to be able to make your own graphics, having a knowledge of digital art can allow you to create more efficiently, expand your repetoire of tools, and equip you with useful skills for working with the publishing or media industries.
No prior experience with digital art is needed. A basic knowledge of Windows, and some art fundamentals, is recommended.
I like to use Paint Tool SAI to learn the basics of digital art. It's a more intuitive (and more affordable) program than Photoshop, but many of the principles we learn will translate easily to other drawing and painting programs. However, if you'd like to purchase Photoshop for your own device and learn to use Photoshop specifically, please request this as an option!
The studio is equipped with a large screen computer, and the newest pen tablet from Wacom. You may also bring in your own laptop and equipment if you prefer that.
The following options are available for ongoing art classes:
Sometimes I hold themed group courses that run for a set number of weeks. Up to 8 students can enroll in each group course. Schedules will be posted here.
Digital Art for Beginners: This 6-week course will introduce students to the basics of working with digital illustration software. The course covers tools and layers, drawing with a pen tablet, best practices for file setup, and the step-by-step of creating a digital illustration. Students will be able to create a character illustration digitally from start to finish by the end of the course. Students must provide their own equipment.
Summer 2018 Schedule TBD. To be notified when the course is open for registration, please submit your email address through the form at the bottom of this page.
